Steve Haney to UCF
6/28/12

Steve Haney started his high school career at East Lansing, then moved to Lansing Eastern for his sophomore year. Last year his family moved to Florida where Haney went to St Thomas Aquinas high school. Haney continued to grow as a basketball player and was hearing from Oklahoma State, Akron, Drake, Wake Forrest and South Florida as well, but in the end he choose Central Florida. "It felt like the prefect fit for me." Haney said. "I visited twice, and me and my family all loved the campus." Steve added "They also really made me a priority, all of their coaches were in contact with me, and especially after June 15th, I would hear from one of them every day."

Haney is playing AAU now with the Florida Mustangs, after playing with the Michigan Mustangs while he was here in the great lakes state. "We got a lot of attention this spring in April during the open period." Haney said "We hope to continue that in July at the Adidas Invitational, The Super Showcase and AAU Nationals." As for Steve's senior year at St Thomas Aquinas Haney is expecting a pretty good year. "We lost two starters, but return our 6th man as well, and do have some nice players coming in." Haney said. "We play a tough schedule so we will get a chance to see where we stand." Haney added "We have been known as a football school but the guys on the team is really starting to want to be good at basketball, we have been in the gym working hard this summer, and we are getting better."

Steve is working hard to get stronger and said he has already gained 7-8 pounds but hopes to gain 10-15 more as he gets ready for his last year in high school and is college career at UCF. Steve did not mind the attention he got during the recruiting process, and in fact enjoyed it. "It was a lot of fun." Haney said. "It is a special thing that most people don't get to experience. To have the calls, emails and twitter messages about you, it was great. I enjoyed it." Though it is a great thing to be recruited and commit to a Division 1 program Steve knows that this isn't the end, it's only the beginning. "I didn't just want to be recruited I want to make an impact." Haney said. "So I am going to keep working hard so I can do that at UCF.
